Coaching legacy
Creating a coaching system where there are enough quality coaches to support children, players and athletes at all stages of their development
Work to date
Community Sports Coaching Programme
Over the last six years over 70 coaches have been employed in this £2.2m scheme to increase the number of coaching opportunities across West Yorkshire.
Over 91,000 people attended community sessions organised by the courses.
Although the scheme is no longer being funded, around half the coaches remain coaching, many of which are self-employed or employed through coaching agencies around the county.
Coach Education
We have co-ordinated and organised a wide range of education workshops, courses and coaching clinics over the last few years. With £120,000 of funding from the Learning and Skills Council we have subsidised qualifications for over 500 people to become sports coaches.
A further 130 people have been supported to gain Level 1, 2, or 3 coaching qualifications through the Yorkshire & Humber Coaching Bursary programme.
Coaching West Yorkshire
Coaching West Yorkshire is a web-based one stop shop for information, training and opportunities for sports coaches across the county.
There are currently 800 coaches registered on the database who receive information and support on a regular basis. The website also acts as a recruitment tool where organisations looking for coaches can have access to a pool of qualified coaches bespoke to their needs.
The online database has been used to pilot a coach registration scheme to raise the standard of coaching delivery in schools and local authority programmes.
This provides a centralised process to verify that coaches meet the required minimum standards to deliver sessions rather than relying on each deployer to check each coach.
The next year
Coaching West Yorkshire
We will continue to grow the number of coaches registering and receiving up-to-date information, and aim to have 2,000 coaches registered in the next year. We will further develop the system to promote coaching opportunities and training, gain a better understanding of coach education needs, and support other activity programmes such as Sportivate and Sports Makers.
Coaching Registration
As part of our work to improve the quality of coaching delivery, we will work with partners to develop coach registration schemes in other West Yorkshire districts to provide quality assurance system for those deploying coaches. We will also educate and support coaching providers to meet the required standards.
Coaching Education
We will continue to support coaches through the final year of the Yorkshire & Humber Coaching Bursary programme, and seek additional funding to support coaches to gain qualifications.
We will also broaden the range of workshops to meet the needs of coaches.
This will include establishing a mentor training programme to support National Governing Bodies to develop their coaches, and delivering Coach Manager training to improve the support coaches receive within their organisation.
Beyond 2012
Coaching West Yorkshire
We aim to embed the Coaching West Yorkshire system as central to coaching development and other activity programmes.
Organisations will be able to seek coaches and coaches seek opportunities. Coaches will be able to access and receive up-to-date information and education will be provided to meet the needs identified.
