Get the Olympic Torch Street Party Started!
Published on: 5th April 2012
Kirklees Council is encouraging communities, families and organisations to start planning to celebrate the Olympic Torch Relay when it comes to Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Batley in just under three months time.
Groups, families and schools are all invited to help make the visit of the Olympic Torch a spectacle to remember forever by decorating the streets with bunting and banners, making music, cheerleading, dressing up or in other creative ways.
Martin Gonzalez from Kirklees Council said, “We really want the communities of Kirklees to line the streets and create a fantastic carnival atmosphere along the routes.
“We have already heard from a number of groups such as choirs who are keen to make the route special in some way.”
“However we do want to hear from anyone making plans so we can advise groups on their activities and suggest suitable and safe locations for them. We also need to make the Torch Relay organisers aware of any activities which are planned along the streets.”
Organisers are asked to contact Martin Gonzalez on 01484 234059 or emailmartin.gonzalez@kirklees.gov.uk with their ideas.
Most of the roads on the route will remain open throughout the routes but police may temporarily stop traffic as the convoy passes.
Maps of the route and ideas on making the route look special are available online atwww.kirklees.gov.uk/london2012
Schools across the UK can now access free learning resources linked to the Olympic Torch Relay through Get Set (london2012.com/getset), the official London 2012 education programme. The activities are designed to help schools and colleges make the most of the Relay by lining the route, and cheering on their local Torchbearers. Resources include ideas for making Flame hats and shakers to welcome the Flame, an assembly presentation to get the school behind a Torchbearer and a film showing one Get Set network school's preparations for the Relay.
