An Update on Equality
Since the introduction of the Equality Act in October 2010, the Sport and Recreation Alliance has received a number of inquiries from their members asking for clarification on current and proposed practices.
They have created an 'Equality Act Toolkit' to assist members in dealing with the requirements of the Equality Act 2010. The toolkit provides useful advice on what you need to do and where you should look for further help with equality issues in your sport.
The toolkit includes the following documents:
- Guidance Note on the Equality Act
- Factsheet - Frequently Asked Questions on the Equality Act
- Guide - 'How to Create an Equality Act compliant Equality Policy'
- Example - Equality Act compliant Equality Policy
For further in formation see the Sport and Recreation Alliance website.
A Question of Timing
A Question of Timing - Stamina work in the winter, speed in the summer, rest after an event... it was seen as the ‘sensible’ formula for many years, but as John Goodbody discovers, thoughts on periodisation have changed considerably.

A Quick Guide to Employment Status of Coaches
Sports Coach UK, in partnership with the HM Revenues & Customs have produced an 'Employment Status of Coaches Quick Guide'. This is for those who employ or deploy coaches, and for coaches themselves.
It contains information on general principles of Employment Status, key pointers on employment and self employment and information about where to go for more help.
What does Employment Status mean?
Employment Status refers to whether a coach is employed or self employed. There are a number of important principles to employment status:
- it is not a matter of choice
- a coach can be both employed and self employed at the same time
- status is determined by the facts relating to the terms and conditions of the relationship (i.e. what happens in practice not what it says in the contract).

Sports Coach UK is continuing to work with HMRC so if you have any questions about employment status of coaches, or the quick guide, please contact Nicola Beattie at Sports Coach UK.
Volunteers and Coaches Required for Cricket Projects in Africa
Cricket Without Boundaries is a community development and HIV / Aids awareness charity operating in Africa. Since its establishment in 2005 the charity has coached over 15,0000 children and trained 1,500 new ICC coaches across Africa with an additional emphasis on raising Aids awareness.
Based on our success since our Trust was established in 2005, we are now looking to recruit volunteers to deliver projects in Kenya, Rwanda, Botswana and Uganda.
- Are you an enthusiastic cricketer, qualified coach or just general sports lover?
- Perhaps you are simply looking at the trip of a lifetime with the chance to give something back?
- You may have a passion for Africa, but just not had the chance to visit this amazing continent?
- Or are you just concerned at the alarming rate that HIV/AIDS is spreading across Africa?
If the answer is yes to one or all of these questions then volunteering for a project with Cricket Without Boundaries will give you the opportunity do something amazing rather than just think about it. Full Details
