Pennine School Sport Partnership XC Report

Pennine School Sport Partnership held their inaugural Cross Country Finals at Salendine Nook High School on a cold sunny afternoon. The finalists had already come through one of the two premilinary rounds.  The first round was held earlier in the month and attracted entrants from the feeder schools to Salendine Nook High, North Huddersfield Trust, Royds Hall High, Colne Valley and All Saints High.  Young people from Huddersfield Grammar school also took part in this competition which involved over 600 runners in the four categories.  The second first round was held at Neiley playing fields and was made up of young people from Honley and Holmfirth, with over 500 runners taking part.

Young leaders for the event came from Salendine Nook High school, who excelled at marshalling the course and also running as hares to set the pace for the runners. The first race was the Year 3/4 girls which was won by Frances Keddie of Wooldale who pushed her school friend Georgina Draper into second place, ensuring Wooldale school won the team event.  Such was the strength of this field the next placed school was Meltham Moor 16 points difference, and third was Lindley Juniors.

The Yr 3/4 boys was won by T Rodway Anand from Huddersfield Grammar, second placed was St Josephs J White, with Lindley Junior's O Simpson coming in third.  Simpsons valliant effort gave Lindley Juniors the school award with Netherthong second and Scholes third.

It was then the turn of a very strong field of Yr 5/6 girls to show determination over the mile long course and S Waterman of Scholes pipped friends L Shepherd from Netherthong and S Allan from Holmfirth Juniors to help her school with the event.  Netherthong school was second and St Patricks was third.  In the final race of Yr 5/6 boys in which the team event was won by Lindley Junior school, Wooldale was second and St Josephs third.  This was an exciting final in which L White of St Josephs having kept a steady pace throughout the race overtook N Farqhar of Wooldale to win first place, C Durrans of Lindley was third.
