Big Dance 2012 - Kirklees
Published on: 18th January 2012
Big Dance 2012 is set to be the UK’s biggest ever celebration of dance and Kirklees Council wants to hear from groups, organisations, schools and individuals keen to be part of Big Dance 2012 in Kirklees.
Big Dance 2012 is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympic Festival.
Big Dance takes place between 18 May and 9 September 2012 with a number of flagship dates for National schools events and Community events. There will be a recognised Big Dance week 7 – 15 July 2012 and other events which will take place to coincide with the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Taking place across the UK Big Dance will feature thousands of events inspired by dance which will take place in all sorts of locations and in all dance styles.
The national programme is being delivered by the Foundation for Community Dance in partnership with a network of regional dance organisations known as the Big Dance Hubs. The Yorkshire Dance Centre in Leeds is the Yorkshire Hub. To ensure as many people from across Yorkshire have the opportunity to get involved they have approached a number of local organisations including Kirklees Council to develop and co-ordinate local activities and events.
Kirklees Council wants to try and involve schools and local organisations in BIG DANCE by developing a co-ordinated approach to produce a calendar of events and activities locally which will also include the national events.
Cllr Jean Calvert, Kirklees Council Cabinet Member said,” Big Dance is a great opportunity to profile, promote and share how much fun dance is. A co-ordinated approach is vital to ensure we make a big impact and involve as many people as possible in the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.”
