Hundreds of schoolchildren will join Huddersfield Giants Robbie Hunter-Paul to officially launch Big Dance 2012 in Kirklees as they showcase their dance and cheerleading skills and perform the haka as the curtain-raiser to the Giants vs Wigan Warriors match on Friday 18 May.
Huddersfield Giants in partnership with Kirklees Council have been working in 20 schools across Kirklees teaching more than 600 young people different dance styles ready for the launch event.
The dancers will start the entertainment from 7pm and to encourage all to come along for the whole evening and reinforce the theme, the Giants mascot, Big G will launch 60 rugby balls signed by the England squad members in to the stands over the 60 minutes before kickoff.
Adding to the entertainment at the Galpharm Stadium there will be music from Hade Edge Brass Band, giveaways and the Jubilee Cup junior final at half time, and to kick off the match the teams will enter to a firework explosion.
Robbie Hunter-Paul has visited schools teaching the haka to 12-14year old lads. The council’s Sport and Physical Activity Team have taught a cheerleading routine to more than 400 young people aged 9-11years in different schools which they will perform simultaneously on the pitch. A further 200 girls who currently take part in various dance classes in the community run by the council will all perform the same street dance routine together.
Robbie Hunter-Paul said, ”It is great that Huddersfield Giants are involved in the launch of Big Dance in Kirklees and helping to deliver a project which encourages young people to be active. Schoolchildren from across the district will have the chance to perform in front of a crowd of thousands at the Galpharm Stadium which is an exciting and unique experience for them and the families who have come to support them.
“By working with schools to take part in the dance performances before the game we are hoping that the match that follows will give the children, their parents and friends a taste of rugby league and inspire those who are not already followers of the sport to become fans of the Giants and the game.”
Cllr Jean Calvert, Kirklees Council Cabinet Member said,” Big Dance 2012 is a great opportunity to profile, promote and share how much fun dance is. The launch event promises to be a spectacular event with such a large number of young people taking part in the haka, cheerleading and street dance. The young people have been practicing their routines in schools and the launch will see them bring the performances together as schools perform the three different dance routines simultaneously. ”
Other Big Dance events include the Stadium Spectacular on 29 June at the Galpharm Stadium and PARKFEST 2012 on 24 June at Greenhead Park – the family fun event which will follow the Olympic Torch Relay in Huddersfield.
