MOVING MORE OFTEN TRAINING COURSES IN KIRKLEES
Published on: 10th February 2012
Free training courses are starting in March in Huddersfield and Dewsbury in May for people who are interested in promoting or delivering activities that will get people Moving More Often.
The courses, being run by the Council, are aimed at developing the knowledge, skills and confidence of people in paid and voluntary roles who care for, support or work with people, in particular frailer older people.
“By moving more often, older people - especially those who are frail - can improve their quality of life and well-being and enable them to remain independent for longer. Physical activity helps to increase people’s mobility and functional capacity, thus reducing accidents. It also helps them to relax, provides social interaction with other people and will give them fun and enjoyment, all of which helps to reduce anxiety and depression,” explained Louise Taylor, the Project Leader for the Kirklees scheme which is run in partnership with NHS Kirklees and is part of a national programme.
Each course is run over four sessions and consists of five modules and three workshops. The Core Module, which outlines the basic concepts of physical activity, particularly for older frailer people, is compulsory but participants can select from the other modules and workshops according to particular interests and needs. They can take part in any or all of the modules, The Games People Play, Walk With Me, On My Own and Out and About, and workshops, Move With Music, Activi-Chi and Bits and Pieces.
Following the training, participants will be supported in providing a range of safe, effective and appropriate activities, games, walking and everyday physical activity opportunities.
“The Moving More Often programme will enable participants to be able to engage older people in quality experiences and new opportunities for activity and learning and help them to retain their independence. It will also broaden their own knowledge and understanding, increase their skills and confidence and possibly even enhance their own roles in the workplace. Most of all, it will be fun,” added Louise.
