Sixth Form Basketball Cup Competition Tuesday 24th January 2012 @ Tong
As the competition started off, the first game was Tong against Beckfoot.
We took anearly lead and kept it for the entire first half of the game. However, due to the Tongteam being made up of five players and no subs, fatigue set in in the third quarter.
By the end of the 3rd quarter, Beckfoot had piled on the pressure and managed to go 19points ahead. In the last quarter we pulled out all the stops - battling through thetiredness.
However, the experience and well-drilled defence of the opposition meant wecould only manage to bring the deposit down to 11.Beckfoot then went on to play St. Bedes, which was an extremely well fought game.
Throughout, neither team could extend their lead to more than 4 points ahead of theopponent. Beckfoot led the majority of the game but in the 4th quarter St. Bedes put ontheir most experienced team - and managed to get their noses ahead by one point. St.Bedes maintained their one point lead for the remainder of the 4th quarter and went on tobeat Beckfoot.
It was then Tong’s turn to play St Bedes. We stepped up our defence dramatically and, despite being tired, we led the entire game up until the last 3 minutes of the game.
I hadgained an injury and was struggling to get up and down court with the pace of the game. Unfortunately we went on to lose by 4 points despite a last minute dash to steal the game.St Bedes won the competition. Their squad was composed of two experienced nationalleague players and an England player.
I would like to thank Mr Baddeley for arranging the competition and coaching us, Aidan Richards for being the table official, the guys from Bradford dragons and Bradford maroons for refereeing and an extra special thank you to Rhianna-mae Laing and Micah Manuokafoa for stepping up and playing at a level against players 4 years older than them.A final thank you to everyone who turned up to compete.
