‘Pom Cheer’ Cheerleading Events (1) & (2)
Thursday 10th November 2011 & Thursday 17th November 2011
@ Richard Dunns SC
This year’s ‘Pom Cheer’ cheerleading events took over Richard Dunns Sports Centre recently, with over 1000 girls from local primary schools filling the sports hall across both dates.
Young girls from Lower Fields, Fearnville, St Stephens, Ryecroft, St Columbas, Marshfield, St Josephs, St Matthews CE, St Anthonys, Hollingwood, and Bankfoot attended across the two events.
With glittery pompoms aplenty, each event saw the girls compete in two competitions a day – one for a routine learnt on the day and one for their own choreographed routine. As well as the competition element, the day offers participants the chance to learn skills and stunts as well as being treated to a demonstration from a cheer squad.
Leading both events this year was Tong’s own Sixth Former Danielle Robinson. Danielle leads Tong’s Cheer Squad and is studying for her Level 3 coaching qualification. Her professionalism, skill and quality of what she delivered across the events should be commended, and she is undoubtedly an asset to Tong.
Our Pom Cheer event saw the girls from Years 1 to 6 being taught cheerleading skills and stunts as well as the ever-popular ‘Funky Chicken’ song. The morning began with a mass warm up, stretch and getting the girls into the ‘Cheerleader Spirit’ – big smiles all round!
Tong High School’s Cheer Squad were also there in support to guide the primary school children, and were exemplary in their behaviour, attitude and professionalism. They also showcased their fantastic skills with a demonstration in the middle of the day.
After learning their arm motions and jumps, the primary school girls were guided through a Level 1 stunt technique in groups of 5 with their peers. This was the first time many of the attendees would have tried such a move, and there were many shrieks of delight at their success.
‘We are proud of you say we are proud of you’ echoed around the sports hall as the girls showed outstanding sportsmanship and celebrated the cheerleading spirit by supporting everyone, regardless of school. Then the competitions commenced…
In the first of the Pom Cheer events on Thursday 10th November 2011, for the routine learnt on the day Hollingwood came in first place, and St Columbas were runners up.
For the schools’ own choreographed routine, St Josephs were the winners and Bankfoot were runners up.
In the second of the Pom Cheer events on Thursday 17th November 2011, for the routine learnt on the day Ryecroft came in first place, and Lower Fields were runners up.
For the schools’ own choreographed routine, St Anthony’s were the winners and Ryecroft were runners up.
It must be mentioned that Ryecroft Primary School were also presented with a sportsmanship award at the second event on 17th November. The girls from their primary school were outstanding in their support of other participants, regardless of school and could be heard cheering on other teams loud and clear throughout the day. Well done!
Winning pictures from 17th November to follow in next week’s update. A video of the 17th November event will be going on Tong’s website – keep checking.

It was time for the U9 Girls to show their football skills in last week’s U9 girls football competition. Hot on the heels of the U11 competition, the girls taking part showed their competitive spirit, but also excellent sportsmanship throughout.
The competition was run on a round robin basis, meaning the girls had to perform consistently well to win the title.
Leaders from Tong High School helped to run the event, assisting with refereeing, scoring and encouraging the players. Reece and Jamie were outstanding throughout the competition and were exemplary role models for the young players – well done!
