British Weightlifting - Leeds Met are Sowing the Seeds of Success

Published on: 19th May 2011

LEEDS Met weightlifting club was set up in 2004 and since it was founded their mission has been to promote the sport of weightlifting to the students of Leeds.

The club was created by several athletics coaches and athletes who enjoyed the weightlifting elements of their training programmes.

Hence, the weightlifting club has strong links with other sports that use weightlifting training and over the years the club has aided in the development of many athletes to notable achievements.

To aid the promotion of competitive weightlifting within Leeds Met, the club holds several competitions a year which are always a resounding success.

In addition, the club enjoys a vibrant social atmosphere and with organised social events linked to the competitions there is a real sense of team spirit.

The club has really developed over the last few years thanks to the efforts of the chairman Chris Morgan and the secretary James Everett. Furthermore, Both Chris and James have helped increase participation, spear-headed the BWL affiliation process and organised key elements for our own competitions.

The head coach at the club is Alex Dinsdale who is a founding member and took a lead role in establishing the club. Currently, Alex is undertaking a PhD in Neuromuscular Biomechanics at Leeds Met.

In addition to Alex, we currently have three assistant coaches: Gareth Nicholson who is also undertaking a PhD in a similar area, Joshua Darrel-Jones and John Fitzpatrick who are both undertaking a Degree in Sport Science.

Several members of the club entered the recent British Universities weightlifting competition in Sheffield, which was very successful with our lifters achieving many personal bests.

In addition, the BUCS competition was a great opportunity to meet like-minded students from other universities, and as such a brilliant experience was had by all who attended.

Moreover, having future BUCS competitions will help the club grow over the next few years.
