Sports Performance workshops for Coaches

As a coach, it’s easy to find yourself only taking courses that satisfy a legal requirement or meet a minimum standard. However what many coaches are looking for is for support to help coaches genuinely improve their own performance, and in turn, the performance of their performers.

In association with West Yorkshire Sport, Trinity Performance are running a series of practical workshops over the coming months that will provide coaches with a better understanding of sports science theory and research but presented in a practical way that they can apply in their coaching.

Sport psychology lecturer, John Perry, who explained the rationale behind Trinity Performance. “Sport science is a great way to improve performance but it doesn’t just need to be for the elite. Everyone who plays sport wants to be better at it; we are trying to make that support more accessible.”

New Badminton England Leader Award Launched!

The award is aimed at anyone over the age of 16 and for the first year it is free to register and complete. The award is unique in the fact it is an online award that is flexible to suit the needs of the learner. The award is designed for those who have already gained a qualification in leadership, such as a Level 1 in Sports Leadership (SL1), a Level 2 in Community Sports Leadership Award (CSLA), a Certificate from a Day Sports Leader Awards, another National Governing Body award or practical experience.

The award consists of three online learning modules which contain information and interactive tasks. The three modules are:

1.       Event Leader - looks at identifying the difference between different types of events and takes the learner through the stages required to plan, set-up and run an event.

2.       Club Leader - looks to identify the key elements, policies and procedure to run a club successfully. It also covers the main roles and responsibilities within a club and helps the learner to become more actively involved in their club.

3.       Activity Leader - looks to identify suitable activities for a group, considering aspects such as participants and equipment. It also enables the learner to plan activities for a group whilst providing support for the planning and implication of an activity.

The learner has the option to complete as many of the modules as they wish, at a time and pace that suits them. The learner can jump in and out of the modules, with their progression being saved as they go through the sections. The module(s) completed will correspond to the certificate that is achieved, so learners do not need to complete all three modules, only those that they feel best suit their needs. So a learner may become an Event Leader, a Club Leader or an Activity leader; if they complete all three modules then the learner will become a ‘Badminton Leader’.

Once a learner has completed an online module, they need to fulfil and log a period of practical experience within the area of the module. During their practical experience the learner will be paired with a learning buddy, their buddy will be there to guide and support them as well as providing the opportunities to gain active experience. Whilst gaining this practical experience the learners will be able to provide vital support and help to coaches, teachers, volunteers and club members.

For more information or to register for the award please see the BADMINTON England website at www.badmintonengland.co.uk/leaderaward

If you have any questions about the new Leader Award please contact the Education and Training Team at education@badmintonengland.co.uk or 01908 268400.

Tax Authorities Announce Clampdown on Coaches

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have announced an autumn campaign to investigate tutors and coaches, with particular focus on those providing private lessons. GBSport contacted HMRC who confirmed that the scope of the campaign will include sport and will also tie in with a current campaign to investigate those businesses who have declared a turnover in excess of £73,000 (the VAT threshold) in their accounts but who have not registered for VAT.

GBSport, the business in sport specialists say "A recent campaign by the Tax Authorities on the plumbing industry resulted in the arrest of five sole traders and a further 600 being placed under civil investigation. All sports organisations should take this opportunity to review their procedures and bookkeeping, especially in respect of the self-employment guidelines, so that they are ready for any queries from the tax authorities."

For organisation needing support with their business planning and ensuring they are correctly managing their tax issues GB Sport are running a Business Essentials course on Tues 11th October (10-2pm) in Sheffield at a cost of £45. See the GB Sport website for further details.
