Published on: 18th December 2011
Bradford Dragons beat visitors Westminster Warriors 110 – 73 to stay in touch with the leaders of EBL division 1 going into the Xmas holiday period. Dragons started slowly to lead 21 – 18 at the first break as the Dragons defence struggled to control the Warriors perimeter game. In the second stanza, Dragons tried to pull away but Lucas for Warriors kept them in the game with 3 triples as Dragons led 52 – 45 at half time. The Dragons team defence finally showed up at the start of the second half as Warriors struggled to get open shots as Dragons closed down the perimeter and surged to a 74 – 56 lead at the final break in play. The last quarter saw Dragons in control and the introduction of new signing Aaron Lawmann who quickly got on the scoreboard with a lay up and then a triple. An alley oop from Silcott brought up the 100 followed by a slam from Scott as Dragons ran out 110 – 73 winners on the night.
After the game, Coach Chris Mellor said,’ It was an even first half, they shot the ball really well and caused some problems around the basket. We played a very good second half when our defence tightened up and we moved the ball well. We had seven guys in double figures which was pleasing and we were good on the boards as well’.
For Dragons, Chris McGrew made a double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, Rihard Sulcs scored 17 and Raimond Pabrieza hit 16 including 3 triples. Vance ‘Maximus’ Silcott also made his trademark double double with 14 points and 12 boards.
Elsewhere for Dragons in a successful club weekend, Dragons 2 men won 71 – 66 away at Liverpool in their EBL division 4 game, Dragons U18 beat visitors Scarborough Seahawks 89 – 45 in their EBL U18 north east conference game and Dragons U16 beat visitors Liverpool 75 – 59 in their home EBL U16 north east conference game. Dragons 3 men lost mid week 49 – 79 to York Eagles in their Leeds league division 1 game but pride of place goes to Dragons U14 boys who played their best game of the season to come back from trailing 35 – 53 at half time to 59 – 63 at the final break. Led by 31 points from Jack Young, Dragons closed the gap to 3 in the final quarter but ran out of steam to lose 74 – 90 on the night.
