DRAGONS LOSE 72 – 74 AT HOME TO MEDWAY PARK CRUSADERS
Published on: 23rd January 2012
Despite leading for almost the whole game, Dragons lost to a Medway triple with 10 seconds on the clock to go down 72 – 74 at home. Dragons pulled ahead in the first quarter with a long triple from Bobby Edmunds on the buzzer to lead 19 – 10 at the end of the first break. As Dragons spilled several easy deuces inside, Medway began to find their range from beyond the arc and won the second period to cut Dragons to a 42 – 38 lead at half time. Despite 3 triples for Medway from Baker, Dragons shaded the third stanza to lead 64 – 59 at the final break. With both teams relying on only 6 players and playing tough defence throughout, Dragons could not pull away despite some excellent play by Denis Scott inside as Medway slowly reduced the deficit. A last minute two from Vance Silcott put Dragons back ahead at 72 – 71 but smart play by Steve Vear drew the Dragons defence in for the kick out to Baker who sank the dagger triple with 10 seconds to go. Dragons were unable to get a clean shot way as Edmunds missed on the buzzer and Dragons lost the game 72 – 74.
After the game Coach Chris Mellor said, ‘We led until just about the last shot but never really made a big enough run to allow us breathing space. We missed way too many relatively easy stuff around the hoop and failed to convert the technical foul shots and the subsequent out of bounds but fair play to them, they executed well at the end and hit key shots in the last two minutes’.
For Dragons, Rihard Sulcs top scored with 19, Denis Scott weighed in with 14 and Michal Ciesla made 12. Vance Silcott also made a double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
