DRAGONS PROGRESS TO ROUND TWO OF THE EBL NATIONAL CUP WITH A 78 – 57 WIN OVER BURNLEY COLLEGE BLAZE

Published on: 19th September 2011

Bradford Dragons first home game of the new season saw Dragons eventually defeat the youthful EBL division 4 visitors Burnley College Blaze by 78 – 57. Burnley played a tough team defence from the start and frustrated the Dragons perimeter game to lead 13 – 8 mid way in the first quarter. The introduction of new USA signing Bobby Edmunds for his home debut gave a little more urgency to the Dragons game as they closed out the first quarter to lead 21 – 18. A dire second quarter saw the scoreboard frozen as both teams failed to make their outside shots. A time out by Coach Chris Mellor midway through the quarter saw the Dragons defence go up a gear as Dragons pulled away to lead 34 – 20 at half time. Dragons took the third quarter to lead 58 – 37 at the penultimate break. In the final quarter, with both teams working hard in defence the score was tied at 20 all to give Dragons a 78 – 57 comfortable win on the night.

For Dragons, Rihard Sulcs top scored with 226, Vance Silcott made 11 and Michal Ciesla and Raimonds Pabrieza both hit 9 points.

After the game Coach Chris Mellor said, ‘I wasn’t happy with our performance over the forty minutes. Our rebounding was nowhere near where it needs to be and our perimeter game was very poor. Credit to Burnley though, Malcolm Leak had his team ready to play and they hustled there backsides off for 40 minutes’.
