Dragons take down Carnegie
Published on: 6th November 2011
Bradford Dragons made it two league wins in two games by beating local rivals Leeds Carnegie 64 – 58 at Leeds. In a re run of the recent EBL National Cup game, both teams played ferocious team defence from the start as Dragons shaded the first period to lead 22 -20 thanks to a buzzer beating double from Vance Silcott.
With both teams contesting every loose ball and Carnegie winning offensive rebounds and neither side able to find an offensive rhythm, Carnegie won the second stanza 12 – 8 to lead 32 – 30 half time. In the third quarter, Carnegie struggled to contain Dragon’s 6’9” centre Chris McGrew on his way to a game high 20 points and Dragons led 46 – 42 at the final break. The outstanding Wilkins pulled Carnegie back in to the game with a monster triple and with Dragons missing shots from the charity stripe the game was tied 56 all at the end of normal time. Urged on by a sizeable noisy band of travelling supporters, Dragons denied Carnegie open shots as Dragons won the extra period 8 – 2 and Carnegie were forced to foul to stop the clock. Silcott and Martin kept their nerve to hit both their fouls shots as Dragons deservedly won 64 – 58.
For Dragons, Chris McGrew top scored with 20 points, Vance Silcott and Bobby Edmunds scored 12 apiece.
After the game Coach Chris Mellor said, ‘It was another great game, neither team really made a decent run to put the game to bed and even though we got a couple of 6 and 8 point leads, they came right back at us. We closed out the game well in overtime just like last week and its good to get a couple of wins on the board early in the season’.
Elsewhere for Dragons in a mixed bag of results, Dragons 2 had a strong road win 90 – 68 away at Middlesborough Lions in EBL division 4, Dragons 3 men lost 58 – 114 to Leeds Demons in their Leeds league division 1 game, Dragons U18 beat local rivals Huddersfield New College 70 - 61 at home in the EBL U18 North East Conference, Dragons U16 clung on to win 67 – 65 against visitors Newcastle Eagles in their home EBL U16 North East Conference game and Dragons U14 lost away 30 – 70 to York Vikings and then lost 51 – 100 to Leeds Tigers in their EBL U14 games. However, Dragons women continued their great start to the campaign with a home 65 – 36 win against Harrogate Raiders in the Leeds and District women’s league to keep them perfect for the season at 4 - 0.
