Football Tournament Tackles Stigma

A five-a-side football tournament has returned to Bradford to challenge stigma surrounding mental ill health.

Thirteen amateur squads from mental health services across the district came together as part of the Sport 4 Health project, hosted by Bradford District Care Trust.

Held at Richard Dunn Sports Centre, the tournament aimed to promote social inclusion and improve physical and mental health through sport.

Mind A, a team from the Bradford-based mental health charity, got their hands on the Sport 4 Health silverware after beating Bridge FC on penalties in a tense final.

Philip Payne, Mind A goalkeeper and player of the tournament said: “Everyone had a brilliant day and really enjoyed themselves. To come out on top after all the matches was the best feeling - I’m so proud of everyone in the team.”

Sarfraz Khan, Senior Community Support Worker at the Care Trust, set up Sport 4 Health last year to inspire people to work together and challenge stigma.

Sarfraz said: “The project breaks down barriers to participation and has many benefits to those who wish to take part. Not only does everyone have fun, they meet new people and realise the importance of teamwork.

“It was great to see service users and staff from a range of diverse communities and cultural backgrounds supporting and participating in the fun event - we can’t wait to do it all again next year.”
