Giant Youth Against Cancer Run 2011

Published on: 21st September 2011

The 3rd annual Giant Youth Against Cancer Run took place on Friday 9 September in Huddersfield. The event, which is organised by the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust and the Huddersfield Giants, invites young people from Huddersfield and beyond to take part in this one mile fun run to raise money for good causes.

This year Almondbury High School hosted the event and many of the schools pupils took part, along with younger children from junior and infant schools in the Almondbury area and further afield.

Over 100 young people took part this year and were treated to pre-run activities by the Huddersfield Giants Community Team and entertained by the ever charismatic Big G! The fun run was officially started by Huddersfield Giants players Keith Mason and Jamie Simpson and Big G was on hand to motivate and encourage the runners.

Helen Mervill, Fundraising Manager at the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust said;- “The run is a fantastic opportunity for young people to get involved with a local charity and support people of their own age with cancer, whilst getting some exercise and having fun!

It was wonderful to see so many young people taking part this year. We were all really pleased by the turn out and we hope the event will have raised lots of money for the fight against cancer in young people.

It was also great to have the Huddersfield Giant community team and players there with us, especially Jamie Simpson who has of course fought his own personal battle with cancer.”

The Giant Youth Against Cancer Run is part of the charity’s “Youth Against Cancer” appeal that encourages all young people to get involved and do all they can to support the fight against cancer in young people.

As a thank you from the Huddersfield Giants to all of the young people who participated, each was given free tickets to the Huddersfield Giants v Leeds Rhinos game on Sunday 11 September and were invited to take part in a lap of honour around the pitch at half time.

Congratulations to all those who took part.
