Heat defeat Warriors continue change in fortunes

Published on: 9th November 2011

Huddersfield Heat moved to a 3 and 3 record in EBL Division 3 North with a comprehensive display away at the Shropshire Warriors on Saturday night. The Heat have now recorded back to back wins in the league for the first time this season, which has seen them move up the league table. The Heat went into the game shorthanded with only 9 available players out of 16, due to a mounting injury list.

HUDDERSFIELD HEAT 100 (23+22+26+29)

Swaine (40), Gray (10), Irving (17), Bigley (13), Woodward (8) – Kraus (6), Perez (0), Stanger (0), Treen (6)

SHROPSHIRE WARRIORS 66 (21+13+22+10)

Crutchley (24), Strickland (0), Shepard (13), Withe (3), Hoar (20) – Hardman (0), Cameron (0), Parry (6)

The first quarter saw both teams scoring freely, with Jason Swaine and Joe Irving combining for 20 of the Heat’s 23 quarter points. However the home team’s scoring duo of Crutchley and Hoar kept the home team in touch, leaving the score at 21-23 at the end of the quarter in favour of the Heat.

Following the quarter interval, the Heat changed to a zone defence, and this began to slow the hosts down on offence, whilst the Heat kept their scoring momentum at the other end. The Heat’s big trio of Sam Gray, Joel Treen and Chris Bigley began to control the boards, and also provided useful scores. A further 12 points from Swaine would leave the half time score with a 12 point advantage to the visitors, 34-45.

The home team would rally after the break, but the Yorkshire men remained in full control, and countered every score with one of their own. Gray and Bigley would pick up the scoring, supported by good play by Estonian guard Kristo Kraus. A 22-26 partial would leave the score at 56-71.

In the first two minutes of the final quarter, the contest would effectively end as the Heat put together a 10-0 run to finally put out the Warriors hope of any comeback. The remaining minutes saw the Heat close down their opponents on defence to leave them on only 10 points for the quarter. Player-coach Eduardo Perez was pleased with the defensive effort:

“We know we can score, but our focus this year is becoming a defensively minded team, and to keep the Warriors to 66 points is much improved from us. I hope there is more to come in that department, for sure.”

Next up for the Heat a Yorkshire derby against Leeds Met Carnegie II at Rishworth (5.30pm, Saturday).
