Heat suffer double blow
Published on: 27th October 2011
Huddersfield Heat suffered their third league defeat against a talented Manchester Magic side on Saturday at the Amaechi Centre. With this defeat, the Heat are currently third from bottom in the EBL Division 3 North table after four sets of fixtures.
HUDDERSFIELD HEAT 63 (18+14+14+17)
Huggett (6), Gray (5), Irving (19), Allison (0), Woodward (4) – Swaine (20), Bigley (0), Andrew (5), Kozlowski (0), Stanger (0), Treen (4), Walker (0).
MANCHESTER MAGIC 93 (22+25+26+20)
Devitt (0), Sullivan (15), Johnson (3), Pilkington (21), Bagheri (18) – Whelan (7), Davey (2), Fasbender (4), Okros (0), Oyefusi (6), Crook (14), Pouale (3).
The first quarter would begin brightly for the Heat, with them able to match Manchester play by play, with all five players on court getting off to quick scoring starts for Huddersfield. The first quarter would end with a minimal advantage to the Magic, 18-22. The second quarter started in the same manner, until the visitors would begin to be riled by a number of questionable decisions from one of the officials. Manchester would take full advantage of this, closing the quarter with a 32-47 lead at the interval.
Despite an early Heat rally after the restart, the Magic were relentless in their scoring, taking advantage of the many errors in the play of the visitors. Again a 12 point differential in the quarter, would push the Magic lead up to an incredible 27 points, 46-73. The final quarter saw both teams run their benches, and whilst the quarter score was closer, 17-20, the final score reflected a marked difference between the performances of the two sides.
It would get worse for the Heat the following day as they crashed out of the National Shield, after losing their second round tie against Leeds Met Carnegie II by 78-103, despite 31 points from Jason Swaine. Player-coach Eduardo Perez summed up the weekend performances:
“Performance wise, that’s probably been the worst for a while to be honest, and I think this week we will be going back to basics in a lot of things to try and remove the errors that are cropping up in our play. I doesn’t matter what else we do at the moment, if we continue to turn the ball over at the rate we are doing, we will get nowhere fast. Next Saturday we simply have a must win game against Birmingham, no doubt about it.”
The Heat will face Birmingham Lions at 5.30pm at Rishworth on Saturday evening.
