Huddersfield Giants, Kirklees Council and Kirklees NHS are teaming up to support the Rugby Football League’s STATE OF MIND programme to raise awareness of mental health issues and highlight help which is available to players, coaches, spectators and their families.
STATE OF MIND is backed by the Rugby Football League (RFL) as the game’s first major attempt to raise awareness of mental health issues. The RFL has designated the last round of fixtures (Round 27) for this Super League season as the STATE OF MIND round. Huddersfield Giants will be supporting the campaign leading up to the Huddersfield Giants v Leeds Rhinos game taking place on Sunday 11 September. At the game there will a series of activities to highlight the STATE OF MIND programme. Look out for the STATE OF MIND logo on t-shirts and flags and information cards on hand to take away and read. All further information can be found at www.stateofmindrugby.com.
STATE OF MIND arose following the sad death of former player Terry Newton in September 2010. The programme aims to link local rugby league clubs, both professional and amateur, in pursuing community wellness, mental health improvement and raising awareness of mental health issues.
First team star and State of Mind Ambassador Andy Raleigh commented: “Huddersfield Giants are really keen to support this important programme. We recognise that mental health issues can affect everyone. As a club we are in a unique position to be able to support and help the rugby league community of players and supporters by raising awareness of issues and make people aware of services and support which is available locally in Kirklees.”
On the morning of Sunday 11 September the first Masters Rugby League festival will be taking place in Huddersfield providing further opportunities to raise the awareness of the campaign. The festival takes place from 10.30am at St Josephs ARLFC, Fartown Rugby Ground, HD2 2SD and is open to any new or past player aged over 35years. Please register as an individual or group of players using the contact below. We are looking to form at least one Huddersfield team to play opposition from Leeds.
