Medals all around as Quest rank 3rd in Great Britain
Published on: 19th October 2011
A remarkable achievement for Quest Taekwondo - with pictures attached for reference. This achievement included:
- All of Quest Taekwondo's 11 competitors securing medals (and two competed in two age categories)
- As a result, Quest finished 3rd in the UK team rankings at the tournament
- Natasha Burdock, aiming for selection in the Great Britain National Team, stepped up in age and weight groups and secures golds
The event, held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, was attended by Olympic Taekwondo clubs from across the country, as far north as Scotland and south as London.
Athlete of the day went to Natasha Burdock. Although only 13 years old, the Silsden starlet, who is bidding for a place in the Great Britain National Team, competed in the 14-17 advanced grade category, however due to how the athletes weighed up on the day she had to move up 3 entire weight divisions to compete, meaning at only 37kg she was put in the under 46kg category.
Her coach, Rick Simpson, was as amazed as everyone else as Natasha went on to claim gold, defeating her opponent from Team Ultimate (Doncaster) 16-15 after 3 intense rounds of protecting her early lead. Coach Simpson said "the achievement is so remarkable it is almost unbelieveable, especially as her opponent had a 25% body mass advantage on her. Her opponent wasn't rubbish either - she had competed at the A-Class British International Championships in Manchester 2 weeks before, which is the 3rd highest standard competition in the world, and got Silver, so this opponet was certainly no standing target".
Quest Taekwondo are sending star players Burdock, of Silsden, and Jake Barnett, of Baildon, who saw a narrow defeat in his Final to claim silver, to Sweden, Holland and Belgium in the first 4 months of 2012 in their bids to be selected to represent Great Britain at the Junior World Championships in Egypt.
Quest Taekwondo are still open to new members - girls, boys, men, women, of all abilities - classes are in Keighley, Bingley, Cottingley, Baildon, Greengates and Thorpe Edge - contact Rick Simpson on 07977 065357 if you are interested, or visit www.questbradford.co.uk
