Coaching providers learn more about COMPASS
The four County Sport Partnership in the region hosted Martin Gallagher, the Chief Executive of COMPASS (Community of Providers of Physical Activity and Sports), the newly formed trade association for coaching providers at an event today at Sno!Zone.
What is COMPASS? It is being set up as a trade association which will represent and promote the interests of providers of physical activity and sport for schools and community groups. The new organisation is also committed to enhancing the quality of coaching provision delivered in the sectors, and are keen to develop industry-wide quality frameworks for providers.
Those coaching providers attending the event had the opportunity to learn more about COMPASS first hand, and ask questions about the development of the new organisation.
This included hearing more about the development of the organisation to date and the progress that is being made toward inviting coaching providers to apply for membership, and how the membership criteria are being developed.
Any coaching providers who missed this update event can find out more about COMPASS by visiting their website at www.compassassociation.org.uk or by speaking to Les Ford Coaching Development Manager at West Yorkshire Sport on les.ford@wysport.co.uk

Trinity Performance workshops
This week saw the second of the courses that West Yorkshire Sport has run in partnership with Trinity Performance at Leeds Trinity University College.
This week’s Nutrition for Sports Performance course saw coaches learning more about the key aspects of fuelling and hydrating the body for training, recovery and sports performance, but a strong emphasis on practical advice in terms of foods and drinks that can impact on performance and be presented simply to performers.
Last month saw coaches attending the Motivating Teams workshop to get a better understanding of the factors that motivate performers and how coaches can work with their athletes to gain greater motivation and buy in to team goals.
Both of these workshops have been extremely well received by coaches, and we will be looking to run these again next year.
Coming up in early 2012 we have two more workshops with Trinity Performance:
Coping with Anxiety (Mon 30th Jan) – this will look at practical techniques for coaches to use with athletes in those pressure situations that are inevitable part of sport.
Fitness Assessment for teams and Field Settings (Tues 28th Feb) – this will help coaches understand and apply simple practical tests that can be done with little or no equipment, yet allow various aspects of sports fitness to be assessed.
International Rugby Board website – support for coaches
Using this site rugby coaches can access a library of over 300 drills as well as tools to plan their own sessions or devise their own drills.
Of particular interest was the collaborative elements of the website. Coaches can post questions to be answered by expects, share their coaching plans with others and look at other coaches’ plans.
High Performance Coaching Breakfast
Twenty coaches from across the region came together last week for the second Yorkshire and Humber High Performance Coaching Breakfast at Leeds Carnegie Stadium.
Guest speakers Mike Watkinson, Director of Lancashire CCC and previously England bowling coach and Lancashire Chief Coach highlighted his experiences of coaching at the top level, including outlining his own coaching philosophy, ideas on mentoring and developing coaches, creating a team philosophy and motivating players, and how this experience could also be used to shape coaching in performance development and club level – highlighting the importance of making sure developing performers can do the basics well.
During a question and answer session Mike also outlined his thoughts on coaches developing self awareness and understanding how others see them, ensuring coaches, and particularly new coaches, have the confidences to coach, managing expectations in talent programmes, and ensuring the leadership qualities of all players are allowed to develop
The event also provided an opportunity for like minded coaches to networks and exchange ideas amongst themselves.
These free events are open to active Level 3 or higher coach (or those working towards a level 3 qualification with the aim of providing CPD and networking opportunities for coaches working at the highest levels, and develop a community of practice amongst these coaches. The events will be arranged every two months around the region. The next event will be in January with details to be announced shortly.
