Published on: 23rd January 2012
Parents taking part in healthy cooking sessions in Lowerhouses in Huddersfield are trying out the Supermeal recipes launched as part of the new Change4life campaign to get families eating healthy, balanced meals.
The Supermeal recipes offer families tasty, nutritional meals which are low cost and easy to make as the latest ideas from Change4life – the national campaign to encourage adults and families to eat well, move more and live longer.
The recipes together with healthy eating tips and loads of ideas on how to refresh the weekly menu without breaking the bank are all available on the change4life website, www.nhs.uk/change4life. Online tools help families select their meals for the week and let them download the list of ingredients they need and the recipes to follow to make nutritious meals.
The “Cook and Eat” sessions are being delivered by Ann Farrar, a tutor trained by the Kirklees FINE Team. The training emphasises the importance of healthy eating and cooking healthily from raw ingredients rather than buying convenience or processed foods. The training is open to paid workers and volunteers working with groups to make healthy, balanced meals.
Dr Judith Hooper, Director of Public Health for NHS Kirklees and Kirklees Council, said “Many of us make New Year’s resolutions to eat a healthier diet but struggle to stick to it. The tips and ideas from Change4life can help families achieve their goals of eating healthy meals by making small changes to the way they shop and the choices they make in selecting meals for the family. Using the online tools, the hard work of deciding what to eat then writing a shopping list is all done for you.”
The website also offers supermarket deals and the chance to sign up for fresh recipes and healthy eating tips delivered straight to an inbox for six weeks. Those who sign up on the website will receive a free two week recipe pack in the post with 14 quick and easy dinners to help save money, save time and be healthy this year.
People without internet access at home can sign up for change4life on the free to use computers at Kirklees Library and Information Centres.
