St John Fisher U11 Sports Hall Athletics Qualifiers
Published on: 7th December 2011
The Batley families of the School Games Area took part in the Under 11 Sports Hall Athletics qualifiers at Batley Sports and Tennis Centre on Tuesday 22.11.11 and as always the events provided great entertainment and excitement for competitors, staff and spectators alike.
A highly creditable, impressive and encouraging nine School teams from the area competed in two separate competitions. Mill Lane, Priestley House, Warwick Road, Carlinghow, Healey, Field Lane and Park Road locked horns in the afternoon and Batley Parish and St Peters competed after School. They were all aiming to qualify for the Batley/Dewsbury Final on January 17th from where qualifiers for the Kirklees Finals are selected.
There were some terrific performances produced by individuals from all the schools but the format requires team consistency from both boys and girls in order to accumulate maximum points. At the half way stage of the afternoon qualifier Healey had built up an overall slight lead but only two points separated Priestley House and Park Road in second place. The second half of the event saw Healey, courtesy of eight impressive individual event wins, extend their lead to run out comfortable winners. The battle for the runners up spot was, in the final analysis, clinched by Priestley House, predominately due to a strong performance by their Girls in the Field events
The final score analysis though underlined the need for both boys and girls squads to record points consistently and in this respect Carlinghow Boys team could count themselves to be unfortunate as it emerged they recorded 122 of their total 170 points. A mention also to the Girls track squad from Park Road as they recorded three wins and three second places out of the six track races.
1st Healey 234 (124 girls and 110 boys)
2nd Priestley House 206 (118 girls and 88 boys)
3rd Park Road 178 (104 girls and 74 boys)
4th Carlinghow
5th Warwick Road
6th Field Lane
7th Mill Lane
The second qualifier, although lacking numbers, maintained the standards and excitement which the afternoon had established. Batley Parish and St Peters almost took turns to win individual events and leading into the last field discipline just 4 points separated the two schools. Two subsequent Javelin wins to complete the programme ensured a St Peters victory which was far closer than the score suggests
1st St Peters 70 (34 girls and 36 boys)
2nd Batley Parish 62 (32 girls and 30 boys)
As always the Sports Hall format delivered two super events which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
