Three in a row as Heat down Carnegie
Published on: 16th November 2011
Huddersfield Heat made it three wins in a row in EBL Division 3 North as they avenged their National Shield exit to Carnegie with a hard fought 81-65 victory on Saturday night at Rishworth. With this result the Heat move up the table into a 6 way tie for 3rd place in the league standings.
HUDDERSFIELD HEAT 81 (22+22+18+19)
Swaine (21), Huggett (5), Irving (14), Bigley (10), Allison (21) – Kraus (0), Perez (0), Stanger (0), Gray (10), Woodward (0), Treen (0).
LEEDS CARNEGIE II 65 (17+21+12+15)
Loftman (19), Cepulis (18), Hodson (7), Useckas (18), Omoyeni (0) – Innis (3), Hinds (0), Joyce (0), Metcalf (0), Rodgers (0).
Following a recent improvement in form the Heat started the game in confident fashion with the returning Aaron Allison controlling the Heat’s offences. Eight points from him and and six from forward Chris Bigley, restored to the starting line-up, ensured a small lead for the Huddersfield side at the first break, 22-17.
The second quarter would see neither team concede any ground, as baskets were traded throughout. The normally reliable Joe Irving was struggling with his scoring, but he continued to be one of the Heat’s standout defenders. Forward Sam Gray would come into the game, and instantly provide an offensive boost with 6 quick points, leaving the score at the interval 44-38 in favour of the Heat.
After the break, the Heat showed that they can be a defensive team, as the restricted Leeds to 12 quarter points, forcing turnovers and controlling the tempo. Carnegie had no answer to the pressure and struggled to keep their scoring consistent, with the score at the end of the third 62-50 in favour of the yorkshiremen.
The first three minutes of the final period would see the game ended as the Heat put together a 17-3 run that would put end to the visitors resistance. Even a late run by Leeds would not endanger the final outcome as the Heat closed out the game in front of a happy home crowd.
Next up for the Heat, they travel to the Sheffield Saints, on Saturday at 4.00pm at All Saints Sports Centre.
