Wharfedale Children make own Olympic bid

A group of sporting school children could get a golden chance to run 100m at the London Olympic Stadium if they can raise a huge amount of money for charity.

St Mary’s School, in Menston, which is a specialist sports college, is taking part in the 2012km Gold Challenge to raise funds for a sporting charity, Right to Play, providing young people the chance to play wherever they live.

And if pupils at the school can raise more than other schools around the country, then they could take part in a 100m sprint on the same track, which will be graced by the likes of multiple Olympic sprint champion and world records holder Usain Bolt later this year.

The winning schools in the challenge, will get to travel to London on Sunday, April 1, for a pre-games test event at the Olympic Stadium and have the opportunity to experience the Olympics at first hand. The Gold Challenge is encouraging individuals or teams of pupils, staff and parents to travel 2012km or 201.2km in the mode of any Olympic sport such as running, walking, cycling, swimming, rowing, canoeing, riding or sailing.

St Mary’s pupils will be running 2012km in teams of four during their PE lessons, with each year group competing to see who can run the fastest time. Martin Green, the school’s faculty leader PE and Sport, said: “We have planned this event along with the team from Gold Challenge to celebrate the start of the Olympic year.

“We are all looking forward to the event and hope that we can raise as much money as possible for Right To Play.

“This event make the start of many Olympic celebrations that will take place at St Mary’s.”
