Guidance for Coaches Working in Schools in West Yorkshire
Published on: 5th March 2012
For some time West Yorkshire Sport has been promoting generic guidance on minimum standards of deployment for coaches, and supporting local quality assurance schemes to ensure coaches working in Leeds and Calderdale schools meet locally set standards.
West Yorkshire Sport has now produced guidance for coaches working in schools across the in the county to bring all these standards together in one place.
The purpose of this document is to provide guidance for organisations and individuals organising or delivering unsupervised sport or physical activity sessions in the school setting but outside of the curriculum. These are recommendations based on Sports Coach UK’s Recommended Minimum Standards of Deployment and include additional recommendations in place as part of local schemes to provide a list of coaches or coaching providers that meet approved standards (including the requirements of Coaching Leeds and Calderdale Council schemes).
Coaches delivering supervised curriculum time lessons should meet the competencies laid out by the Association for Physical Education (AfPE).

As well as this guidance, we have also produced a simple quick reference guide to coaching and leadership qualifications. This is both for coaches and for organisations that deploy or employ coaches to help ensure that appropriately qualified coaches and leaders are used to deliver sessions.
