Archery

Archery is a fast growing Olympic and Paralympic sport fun for people of all ages and abilities to take part in. There are many ways you can get involved and progress in the sport as an archer, leader, coach, judge or club volunteer.
Have-a-go events and beginner's courses are regularly organised within clubs, youth groups, schools and holiday camps so even if you have never tried archery before, there are lots of ways to give it a go in a friendly environment.
Archery GB is the sport’s governing body in the UK. Since April 2010, Archery GB has been able to assemble a small staff development team as a result of funding from Sport England. This is an exciting time for Archery as the development plan is implemented, which will take the sport to 2013.
The development team is responsible for providing support to developing clubs, supporting schools better to deliver archery and introducing new young people to the sport, and improving the capacity of the sport through the development and support of coaches and volunteers.
Archery GB has signed agreements in place with County Sport Partnerships as they help to support the delivery of archery at a local level. Clubs are central to the Archery GB development plan and it is essential that the resources to support clubs are maximised.
Archery GB has a club development programme, ontarget. Through this programme, ontarget will provide clubs with three main benefits – Recognition, Rewards, Development. All Archer y GB affiliated clubs are eligible to join at any time - there is no closing date.
Most counties have a County Archery Association with volunteer members that will be able to support Archery activity and provide advice about getting involved in archery. Some counties also have volunteer County Development Coordinators that are working with the development team to provide support locally.

Archery is a sport for all people. Men, women and juniors from all sections of the community are encouraged to participate at all levels in the sport. Also Archery is increasingly popular with people with disabilities.
Archery for All
Archery provides opportunities for all in a number of ways. It provides four disciplines where the shooting format differs:
- Target archery is the most popular form of archery, in which which members shoot at stationary circular targets at varying distances and is practiced indoor and outdoor
- Field archery involves shooting at targets of varying (sometimes unmarked) distance, often in woodland and rough terrain
- Clout is a form where archers shoot at a flag (known as "the Clout") from a relatively long distance and score points depending on how close each arrow lands
- In flight archery the aim is to shoot the greatest distance and requires a large flat area such as an aerodrome
There are numerous volunteering positions, such as:
- Members help to run clubs, taking roles such a chairman, secretary or treasurer
- At local and national level, there are numerous opportunities to help organise and run the sport from tournament organisation to committee work
- Officials, such as coaches and judges, receive training and examination to help develop and regulate archery
- National level positions work alongside the employed staff as the UK National Governing Body to manage the sport and also to represent in UK and International forums
