Basketball: Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE)

What is AASE?

The AASE is for elite athletes aged 16-18 who wish to continue their sporting career and gain qualifications at the same time. The AASE is not a qualification for simply playing the game. It is a two-year programme where Apprentices receive additional support and guidance for their basketball development and education. The AASE is aimed at athletes:

"who have the realistic potential to achieve excellence in their sport and are seeking to perform at the highest level as their main career goal"

AASE provides various exit routes for players that do not reach their professional goal, and provides qualifications to fall back on once their playing career has finished.

For England Basketball the basic philosophy of AASE is to "Support (elite) athletes in an educational environment". Our vision is to see the AASE programs become a key part of the Basketball Player Pathway in England.
More information is available at England Basketball AASE programme.

Where is my nearest AASE institution?

West Yorkshire are lucky enough to have their own AASE institution within our county. Bradford College is one of less than 20 institutes in the UK that supports basketball at this level.

The course is coordinated by Sam Messam, who has recently been appointed England U17 Team Manager and has years of playing and coaching experience behind him. He is happy to answer any questions that you may have with regards to the course.

The programme is support by Bradford Dragons but there is no requirement for you to join this club if you would prefer to remain at your current club, however training and matches that are part of the course are an essential component of the programme and must be attended.

Sam Messam can be contacted on s.messam@bradfordcollege.ac.uk or 01274 433392.
