Backing the Best

The rising cost of becoming a sports star has led to some of England’s top up-and-coming talent dropping out of sport altogether.   Research carried out by the charity SportsAid shows athletes and their families are paying, on average, £6,200 a year to fund their child's sporting ambitions.

Backing The Best – Sport England’s ground breaking scheme will commit £5.5 million of National Lottery funding over four years to support the families of the next Bradley Wiggins, Jessica Ennis-Hill or Ellie Simmonds who might feel competitive sport is otherwise out of their financial reach.  The scheme is open to young, exceptionally talented athletes in the early stages of their careers and who face the greatest financial challenges will qualify.

SportsAid will be working with coaches and national governing bodies of sport to identify the athletes for whom an award could make a big difference.  Annual awards of up to £5,000 will be made on a case-by-case basis, specifically contributing to essential costs such as travel, accommodation, kit and support by coaches and physios.

The first awards will be made in February 2016 with up to 100 young athletes expected to benefit in the first year, rising to around 200 in subsequent years.  To find out more and get in involved, an athlete should speak to their coach and/or national governing body. NGBs are able to make nominations to SportsAid in November.

SportsAid

SportsAid helps the next generation of British sports stars by giving them financial support and recognition during the critical early years of their careers.

These athletes are typically aged 12 to 18 and are among our brightest hopes for future Olympic and Paralympic success.

The SportsAid Awards they receive are funded by the charity's partners, donors and fundraisers - recognising their achievements and potential before anyone else. These awards help aspiring athletes to train harder and compete more effectively so they can progress up to the senior and/or international level of their sport. At this point many go on to become Olympians and Paralympians.
